Speech & Language Therapy for Families in the Twin Cities

Services

Talk in the Nest specializes in providing speech and language therapy for children with communication delays and differences. We offer convenient speech therapy services that take place online, in your home, or in local outdoor spaces in the Minneapolis metro area.

At Talk in the Nest, we believe in:

  • A holistic approach to speech therapy that considers the child’s physical, sensory, social-emotional and cognitive needs

  • Play-based therapy that helps your child reach their goals while having fun

  • Neurodiversity affirming care that values connection over compliance

  • Therapy that builds children’s confidence to use their own voice

  • Collaborating with and empowering parents

Evaluations

Evaluations help us gain information about your child’s strengths and needs through:

  • Parent questionnaires & developmental history

  • Observations during play

  • Standardized assessments

The evaluation may look at your child’s speech, language, social communication and/or auditory development skills. You will receive findings and recommendations that guide length and frequency of therapy.

Our Approach to Therapy

At Talk in the Nest, speech therapy looks like play. Each session is individualized and flexible, designed to meet your child’s needs.

We honor all types of minds and respect the unique way that your child processes the world. Our goal is to consider all aspects of your child’s development— social, emotional, sensory, cognitive and communication.

Parents and caregivers are an important part of our process. We invest time into supporting you so that you can help your child reach their goals even faster.

Language Therapy

Language therapy takes place during your child’s favorite activities. We will focus on your child’s unique talents while building new language skills through play, incorporating toys and routines that they enjoy. Our sessions find natural opportunities for connection and communication, allowing your child to:

  • Learn functional, everyday words and phrases

  • Express themselves more clearly

  • Connect with others

  • Reduce frustration and communicate with confidence

Nature-Based Speech Therapy

We will work toward your child’s speech or language goals outdoors— in a sensory-rich environment that supports self-regulation, attention, social-emotional learning, and cognitive development. Activities may include going on a leaf hunt, balancing on logs or playing “house” in a stick fort. Nature-based speech therapy will help your child:

  • Learn to understand and use new vocabulary words

  • Develop stronger social communication skills

  • Improve listening skills

  • Develop clearer speech

Listening & Spoken Language Therapy

Children with hearing loss speak how they hear, so our sessions ensure that your child has optimal access to sound. In therapy sessions, we may use the “learn to listen sounds,” which are toys to teach auditory concepts, or developmentally appropriate books and games to help your child:

  • Develop listening skills

  • Speak clearly

  • Communicate with confidence

  • Succeed in school alongside hearing peers

Parents are an especially important part of therapy when a child is deaf or hard of hearing. Our specialist will coach you to use strategies that support your child’s auditory skills throughout every day. You will become confident in your ability to help your child progress even faster.

Virtual parent coaching is convenient for those located both in and outside of Minnesota. We will meet on a secure virtual platform to discuss topics, including:

  • Using strategies to support early language development

  • Navigating school-based speech therapy services and advocating for an IEP (Individualized Education Program)

  • Reviewing your child’s most recent audiology report and understanding its impact on speech and language development (for children with hearing loss)

Through parent coaching sessions, you will feel empowered to make decisions about your child’s health and education while helping them make faster progress in therapy!
